How to Score Band 8.0+ in IELTS Speaking

Published on July 12, 2026

Understanding the Speaking Criteria

The IELTS Speaking test is a face-to-face interview divided into three parts. To score a Band 8.0 or above, you must excel in four key criteria: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource (Vocabulary), Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation.

1. Speak with Fluency and Flow

To score high, avoid long pauses, self-correction, and hesitations. Use discourse markers (like 'on the other hand', 'moreover', 'consequently') to link your ideas smoothly.

2. Master Collocations and Idiomatic Language

Band 8 speakers use less common and idiomatic vocabulary. Instead of saying 'very happy', use 'thrilled' or 'over the moon'. Ensure you use them naturally in context rather than forcing them.

3. Vary Your Sentence Structures

Show the examiner that you can use a mix of simple, compound, and complex sentences. Use conditional sentences (e.g., 'If I had the chance, I would...') to showcase your grammatical ability.
